Someone commented that they like the Gear tag but were curious about what apps I use. I don't have a ton to recommend, but the ones I do all work on iOS or Apple Watch. I was an Android user until the iPhone 15 came out. Why did I wait so long? I hate proprietary chargers — they're terrible for travel. The 15 was the first iPhone to use USB-C.
Here are the apps I use, and yes, most of them aren't free.
DictaWiz
Notes & Keyboard Replacement
I loathe the name of this app, but it does two very different things extremely well. It's a note-taking app and a replacement for the built-in iPhone keyboard. You can use either function or both. Let me discuss them separately.
The Notes
DictaWiz is hands-down the best note-taking app I know of — and believe me, I know them all. It works on iPhone and Apple Watch and transcribes your voice perfectly and quickly. I use it every single day, sometimes as many as a dozen times. I simply press the Action Button on my iPhone, or a complication on my Watch, and start talking. The app perfectly transcribes what I say and saves it as a note. I can later open the app and sort, tag, or search through my notes. I can append more to any note, by voice or keyboard. I can export or share the audio (the Poemagraphs were recorded with DictaWiz), the transcription, or both. DictaWiz has a ton of amazing features no other note-taking app has. If you're someone who needs to get ideas out of your head fast, there's no better way to do it.
The Keyboard
DictaWiz can also — but doesn't have to — replace the iPhone's built-in keyboard with its own, which has a ton of wonderful features. On top of better voice transcription than the iPhone keyboard, you can do things like select a word and hit Shift to toggle its case: Uppercase / lowercase / ALL CAPS. You can set voice transcription to casual or professional per app — for instance, minimal punctuation in Messages and strict punctuation in your word processor. You can set punctuation for unspecified apps to Full, Casual, Minimal, or None. You can keep a permanent number row above the letters. And on and on.
Quiche
Web Browser
This is my favorite browser for the iPhone. It's customizable, fast, blocks ads and trackers, supports Kagi and other search engines that aren't Google, has dark mode, has no usage monitoring, and is made by one dude.

Finalist
Schedule / Planner / Calendar / Tracker
This is the best daily planner I've found. Though I have very little to plan, I love the layout. It also has a built-in habit tracker, daily journal, and more.
Merlin
Bird Identifier & Tracker
Free app that lets you record birdsong and identify species.
Claude
AI
Yes, I use AI. It has saved my ass many times while traveling — keeping me from getting lost, helping identify unfamiliar signage, telling me about venomous snakes and pokey plants, local customs and best practices.
Wise
Banking
This has turned out to be a fantastic app for me. It lets me hold multiple currencies in my account at once and transfer between them easily. Euros, USD, and CAD are my most-used. When you pay at a vendor it uses the local currency, so there are no added fees. It works with Apple Pay and also comes with a physical bank card you can use at ATMs to get cash. Dead simple to use, and it costs nothing beyond conversion / transfer fees — all of which are lower than my regular bank or any currency counter. For instance, I sent CAD $500 to my Euro account and got a rate 1.7 percent better than my bank's, with a transfer fee of just 51 cents.
Rome2Rio
Travel
This app lets you punch in Points A and Z — and as many points in between as you like — and then gives you every possible way to get between them, pulling bus, train, plane, boat, and other data for your locations and showing all the routes, costs, and times.
GestureVault
Private Vault
A simple app that works as a vault for photos and files. You save whatever you want to it, and then it's impossible to get into without performing a finger gesture on the screen. Once you've done the gesture, it launches Face ID, which, if passed, reveals the hidden content. I keep photos of my ID and such behind it.
Project Indigo
Camera
I have this camera app attached to the camera button on my iPhone. It allows finer control than the built-in camera app and takes much better nighttime photos.
Faraday
Privacy / Security
If you stay in a lot of unfamiliar places like Airbnbs or hotels, this app is useful for scanning for hidden cameras and oddities on your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks. Easy to use, and it gives you clear information.
WorkOutDoors
Workout Tracking · Apple Watch Only
This app describes itself as "the most powerful and configurable workout app for the Apple Watch." That's accurate. Whether you hike, walk, cycle, run, ski, paddle, or swim, WorkOutDoors tracks it better than anything else. When I'm not in Toronto, I literally don't start moving until I launch WorkOutDoors to keep track of where I'm going. Without an Apple Watch it has no purpose — but that also means when it's running, it uses the Watch's GPS, so you can leave your phone at home. Or, if you always take your phone with you, you can run other GPS apps on the phone and it won't conflict. The most incredible thing about this powerful app is that it's only $9 for lifetime use. It was the first app I ever bought for the Apple Watch.
Acme Weather & RAD Weather
Weather
Yes, I use two weather apps. Acme is my favorite for warnings of rain and other inclement weather. RAD is my favorite for widget display and accuracy. When RAD first launched it had a great lifetime price; I got in early and believe I paid $35. It's now $99 for lifetime or $20 per year. Unfortunately, Acme only has annual plans — $35 for a single user or $70 for a family. You can try both for free, of course, and see which you prefer.
NYTimes
News
As shitty as their trans coverage is, I've been a longtime subscriber to the NYTimes. This is mostly because The Guardian's coverage is even shittier. I have a full family digital subscription, which lets me add three friends to my account; each of us gets access to everything — news, games, cooking, etc. The cost? CAD $3 per month.
Particle
News
A sort of RSS reader just for news. It reads all the main headlines for the topics you choose — across the political spectrum — then summarizes everything in a balanced way, with links to all its sources. Useful for US news, but I mostly use it for world news.
Tapestry
RSS Reader
My RSS reader of choice. I've tried tons, and they're mostly interchangeable. I settled on Tapestry and see no reason to change — well, maybe their hideous icon.
Kindle (with eReaderIQ) & Libby
eReaders
I use Kindle for all the books I've purchased and Libby for library eBooks. I hate supporting Amazon, but I do it the same way I support the NYT: by giving them as little as possible for as much as possible. I use a website called eReaderIQ to enter the names of all the books and authors I want to read, then tell it to let me know when any of them drops below $3. I get an email when the price drops and usually have 24 hours to make the purchase. I do all my reading on Viwoods devices, which deprives Amazon of the cost of a Kindle device.
Obsidian / HelixNotes / BYOK Studio
Writing
I switch back and forth between these somewhat willy-nilly, never able to settle on one. Obsidian doesn't have free syncing between devices, otherwise I'd just use it. HelixNotes does but isn't as feature-rich. BYOK Studio does too, but I think it's overpriced for the lifetime subscription. I might feel differently if they had an Android app, but they only let you use it on Android through a web app — and I only write offline, using my Viwoods readers as writer-deck screens.
Rideshare
Transport
I don't really use much ride sharing when I travel. However, when I do, I try to use local apps like Bolt in Europe rather than Lyft or Uber. Under no circumstances will I use Uber, as I consider the company very rapey.
